CLIME makes available writings in Arabic that democracy activists and educators are welcome to download and use in their programs, with proper attribution to CLIME. As we complete our projects, new materials will be added to this section.
The Iraq Democracy Papers
This 6-part series of writings draws from the literature of different eras and cultures (Arabic, Islamic, Western and Asian) to examine universal versus particular characteristics of democracy, and include case studies to illustrate how democratic principles have been implemented in other countries. While the series was originally compiled in the context of Iraq’s constitutional drafting process, many of the writings are of relevance to other countries in the region.
The papers also featured Iraqi scholars and writers who comment on how the selected writings apply to the situation in Iraq. The papers were published with funding from the U.S. Department of State, and were distributed by our partner, the American Islamic Congress, to 2,500 community leaders, activists, intellectuals and politicians in Iraq involved in designing the country's new political system. An English summary of the series may be found here.
